Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston Essay

In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston describes the life of Janie Mae Crawford, a mixed black and white woman living in the South during the early 1900’s. Due to her mixed heritage and her gender, Janie struggles to find her place in society, but she becomes determined to find true love. Throughout the novel, Janie develops relationships, both healthy and toxic, that lead her to achieving her ultimate goal of true love. Hurston uses Jamie’s quest for true love to enlighten the reader on the importance of gender equality, the insignificance of social status, and the vile nature of jealousy. Throughout the novel, Hurston emphasizes the need for gender equality in relationships as Janie undermines the stereotypical gender roles in her society in order to find true love. When she discovers her sexuality, Janie is called to her quest and Nanny takes the role of her mentor. Nanny arranges Janie’s marriage to Logan Killicks because she â€Å"wa nts [her] to have†¦protection† (Hurston 15). Using Nanny’s mentoring, Hurston presents one of many beliefs about gender roles in marriage: the belief that it is necessary for women to marry for â€Å"protection†, and it is the man’s role in the relationship to provide it. When Janie marries Logan, she begins her quest and waits â€Å"for love to begin† (22), however, the marriage proves to be hollow and fails. At the beginning of the novel, the reader is greeted with a seemingly innocent little girl named Janie Crawford. â€Å"She was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the panting breath of the breeze†(Hurston 16) That just screams innocence. This little girl is just like a normal little girl, she is fanaticizing over the idea of being in love, and finding her prince charming. While she was growing up, Janie did not have a very good example, or an example at all, of what true love is. Janie never met her parents, and was raised by her â€Å"Nanny†, a woman with very old timer beliefs. Janie’s nanny was very strict about these things as well, she wanted Janie to be better than her peers, and have more material possessions than anybody else.
